HARRISBURG – Legislation by Rep. Kate Klunk’s (R-Hanover) to give farmers more options with how their preserved land is managed was unanimously approved by the House Agriculture and Rural Affairs Committee on Tuesday.
“
House Bill 1550 would give farmers the freedom to relinquish the option to construct a new farmstead residence on their preserved land,” Klunk said. “This would aid them in tax purposes and would make it easier to pass the farm to the next generation of farmers at a lower value.”
Under current law, farmers are permitted to construct a new house on their preserved land. They are also allowed to subdivide a section of land off the property to construct the home.
However, farmers are not permitted to subdivide a portion of the property on which a home already exists. Klunk’s bill would reverse that provision, allowing already-constructed homes to be subdivided from the property.
“This issue is very important to farmland preservation, especially to the people involved in preservation in York and Adams counties,” Klunk said.
The legislation now goes to the full House for a vote.
