HARRISBURG – Rep. Tim O’Neal (R-Washington) today issued the following statement in response to House passage of a $33.997 billion Fiscal Year 2019-20 budget:
“This budget contains a lot of good things driven by a strong economy, including another no-tax or fee increase plan. We were able to increase preK-12 education by $432 million. Furthermore, we are setting aside all of the General Fund balance from the Fiscal Year 2018-19 state budget for the Rainy Day Fund. This is expected to total at least $250 million and will prepare the state in case of an economic downturn.
“Despite my positive vote, I am deeply concerned with a budget process that allows the governor to spend about $650 million in supplementals. We worked hard last year to craft a plan for Fiscal Year 2018-19. The fact that the governor can ignore that bipartisan agreement and spend more is a travesty. We are coequal branches of government, and the process that allows the governor to spend unchecked needs to stop. I plan to work with my colleagues to reform this process.”
School districts within the 48th District will receive the following education funding amounts:
• Canon-McMillan – $22.97 million, a 2.5% increase.
• Chartiers-Houston – $7.51 million, a 2.3% increase.
• Trinity Area – $21.23 million, a 3.3% increase.
• Washington – $14.29 million, a 2.5% increase.
The 48th Legislative District in Washington County includes the city of Washington; Chartiers, North Franklin, North Strabane and South Strabane townships; and Canonsburg, East Washington and Houston boroughs.
