HARRISBURG – State Rep. Rich Irvin (R-Huntingdon/Centre/Mifflin) has authored legislation approved by the state House to continue the Pennsylvania Children’s Health Insurance Program (CHIP), which is set to expire on Dec. 31.
“CHIP is a ground-breaking program that was started here in Pennsylvania and has provided health insurance to thousands of children who otherwise would slip through the cracks,” said Irvin. “My own children were covered under CHIP in the past, so I recognize how valuable a program it is.”
CHIP is designed to provide insurance coverage to uninsured children and teens (up to age 19) whose families earn too much to qualify for Medical Assistance, but who cannot afford to purchase private insurance. CHIP is supported by both state and federal funds and provides payment for health care coverage for eligible children who meet income and other criteria.
“In Pennsylvania, there are over 174,000 children currently enrolled in CHIP, including 2,371 children in the three counties I represent,” said Irvin. “My legislation will ensure that children across the Commonwealth continue to have access to health care coverage.”
House Bill 1388 received unanimous support in the House and now goes to the Senate for consideration.
