HARRISBURG – Legislation by Rep. Jesse Topper (R-Bedford/Franklin/Fulton) to assist medically-trained veterans find jobs in the private sector medical field was unanimously approved by the House Veterans Affairs and Emergency Preparedness Committee this morning.
“
House Bill 302 will ensure veterans who want to continue in the medical field following their service can do so without encountering hurdles in obtaining the necessary certifications,” Topper said. “With a shortage of EMTs and paramedics in Pennsylvania, this bill would help veterans trained in the medical field secure jobs that desperately need to be filled.”
Specifically, Topper’s legislation would amend
Act 23 of 2015 to include the Department of Health, which certifies EMTs and paramedics throughout the Commonwealth, on a list of departments that must strongly consider a veteran’s military education, training and experience when fulfilling requirements for professional credentials.
“By including the Department of Health on the list of Act 23 departments, we would prevent the duplication of training and education of veterans and would assist them in their transition to civilian life,” Topper said. “Combat medics are highly trained individuals who would be invaluable assets to ambulance and medical services and the people they serve.”
The bill is now in the House Rules Committee.
