HARRISBURG – Legislation to designate an Indiana County bridge in the memory of a local Vietnam War veteran, sponsored by House Majority Leader Dave Reed (R-Indiana), was passed unanimously by the Pennsylvania House of Representatives on Monday.
House Bill 1219 now heads to the Senate for its consideration.
Reed’s bill would rename the Diamondville Bridge, along State Route 1012 in Cherryhill Township, as the “Sgt. Robert Eugene Goodlin Memorial Bridge.”
Goodlin, who passed away in May 2016 at age 70, grew up in Commodore and graduated from Purchase Line High School. During the Vietnam War he served in the United State Army as a sergeant with Company B, 2nd Battalion, 50th Infantry, 2nd Armored Division. Among his decorations, Goodlin was awarded the Bronze Star Medal and the Vietnam Service Medal with two bronze service stars.
“Following his death, American Legion Post 222 in Clymer and the Cherryhill Township supervisors suggested we name the Diamondville Bridge in memory of Sgt. Goodlin,” Reed said. “It is a fitting tribute to his life and service to this country.”
“The veterans at the Clymer Post 222 believe that it’s necessary for our warriors to be recognized. Robert Eugene Goodlin was a warrior,” said Dan Rice, American Legion Post 222 Adjutant.
The legislation calls for the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation to erect and maintain signs displaying the name of the bridge at both ends of the span.
