HARRISBURG – Branches of the military would have access to an expanded list of potential recruits under legislation authored by state Rep. Will Tallman (Adams/Cumberland). House Bill 524 now sits with the state Senate after passing the House Monday with overwhelming bipartisan support.

“In addition to assisting our military recruiters, House Bill 524 would bring Pennsylvania into compliance with federal standards established as part of the Every Student Succeeds Act of 2015,” Tallman said.

Institutions of higher education, as well as trade schools and prospective employers, currently may obtain the names, home addresses, and telephone numbers of 12th-grade students in Pennsylvania’s public schools. House Bill 524 would give military recruiters that same access and expand it to include information on 10th- and 11th-grade students.

“Any student who is 18 years of age or older, as well as the parent or guardian of a student who is under the age of 18, does have the option of making a written request that the information be withheld,” added Tallman. “In addition, nonpublic schools that maintain a religious objection to service in the armed forces would not be required to comply with the bill’s requirements.”

Questions about this or any state government issue may be submitted to Tallman’s district office at (717) 259-7805 or 1-877-480-9525.
