HARRISBURG – Rep. Sheryl Delozier (R-Cumberland) today hosted a Capitol press conference to help unveil a documentary film bringing attention to stigmas associated with people with disabilities.
“Differences scare people, but differences are not deficits,” Delozier said. “I encourage everyone to not just make a snap judgement. Instead, take the time to learn about others. End the stigma against those with disabilities.”
On Tuesday, the House of Representatives approved Delozier’s resolution (
House Resolution 324) declaring May 10, 2017, as “Annual Stigma Awareness Day” in Pennsylvania. The resolution’s goal is encourage Pennsylvanians to consider their personal contribution to stigmas surrounding people with disabilities and challenge themselves to change their thinking.
The Stigma Project, a statewide campaign funded by a grant from the Pennsylvania Developmental Disabilities Council, aims to reduce stigma through public relations and communications. As part of the campaign, a 40-minute documentary, titled “What Are You Thinking?” was created to serve as a catalyst for deeper-level conversations about stigmas against those with disabilities. It features a number of experts who explain how stigmas contribute to the way people are conditioned to think about people with disabilities.
Organizations across the Commonwealth are scheduling screenings of the documentary followed by panel discussions. To view the list, please visit www.letsthinkagain.org. Additional dates and location are being added weekly.
