HARRISBURG – As sexual assault is the most underreported crime in the United States, according to the Federal Bureau of Investigation and law enforcement officials across the nation, Rep. Rosemary M. Brown (R-Monroe/Pike) sponsored
House Resolution 134, which designates April as Sexual Assault Awareness Month in Pennsylvania. An average of just 31 percent of rape and sexual assault incidents are estimated to be reported.
“This resolution is about bringing awareness to the reality of sexual assault and violence, and encouraging greater efforts at the state and local levels toward education and prevention,” Brown said. “It is estimated that one in five girls and one in six boys will be sexually assaulted by 18 years of age. These are more than horrifying numbers, the lasting affects these crimes have on individuals will shape the society in which we live. The sexual violence epidemic is growing at alarming rates that is traumatizing men, women and children across our state and nation.”
Sexual violence consists of a range of unacceptable behaviors, including rape, incest, molestation, date and acquaintance rape, statutory rape, marital or partner rape, ritual abuse, sexual exploitation, forced prostitution, indecent sexual contact, sexual harassment, exhibitionism and voyeurism.
While speaking on the House floor about the resolution on Monday, Brown recognized the 50 rape crisis centers in Pennsylvania for the impactful work they do in their communities while caring for more than 30,000 victims and their families each year. This is the fifth time Brown has sponsored a resolution to dedicate Sexual Awareness Month in Pennsylvania. The House approved the resolution on Monday.
