HARRISBURG - House Speaker Mike Turzai (R-Allegheny) issued the following statement regarding the passing of Dan Rooney, owner of the Pittsburgh Steelers and former United States Ambassador to Ireland:

“I am deeply saddened to hear of the passing of Dan Rooney.  Lidia and I send our deepest condolences to the entire Rooney family as well as to all of those who knew this incredible gentleman.

“Dan Rooney’s legacy is secure as the leader of the most storied franchise in professional sports. He reached this pinnacle as a sportsman committed to fair play, equal opportunity, and the understanding that sports must uplift and inspire in other aspects of life.

“His service to Pittsburgh and his efforts to open doors to minorities in coaching were capped by a final career as Ambassador to Ireland. Years before this appointment, Mr. Rooney played a vital, behind-the-scenes role in promoting a peaceful settlement to the conflict in Northern Ireland. It is no coincidence that the first Pittsburgh Steelers bar in Europe is in west Belfast, where members of all faiths and politics gather to share a common bond with the team Dan Rooney led.”
