HARRISBURG – Rep. Tedd Nesbit (R-Mercer/Butler) today voted in favor of a state budget proposal that holds the line on spending while not including any new or increased taxes or borrowing.

“We appreciated the proposal that Gov. Tom Wolf put forward in February and that it reduced dozens of line items, but my colleagues and I felt that it didn’t go far enough,” Nesbit said. “In looking at a potential $3 billion deficit by the end of next June, it’s evident that we must reinvent the way we govern and the budget process as a whole. As a result, this product contains many positives I can support but also many items where I have serious concerns.”

The budget proposal that passed the House today totals $31.52 billion and is $815 million less than the governor’s plan. It does not include any new taxes or borrowing but responsibly funds core functions of government, namely education and public safety.

Nesbit said that additional revenues are needed to help balance the budget, but that the House has already passed several options, including expanded gaming and liquor privatization proposals, which would make up the shortfall.

“This is a budget that responsibly funds our state and does so without further burdening the taxpayer,” Nesbit said. “I am optimistic that most of this plan can realistically make it to the governor’s desk, and we can spend more time focusing on other priorities of state government.”
