HARRISBURG – Rep. Curt Sonney (R-Erie) today joined the majority of his colleagues in the House of Representatives in passing a state budget that accepts most of the governor’s requested spending cuts, and then reduces costs by roughly $800 million more; thereby forcing state government to operate more efficiently and effectively. The $31.52 billion state budget proposal funds the core functions of government, doesn’t raise taxes or increase debt, and continues to invest additional dollars in areas such as education.
Sonney, a member of the House Appropriations Committee, offered the following statement on
House Bill 218:
“Although negotiations will continue with the Senate and governor before a final plan is enacted, I feel confident this proposal sets the right tone and priorities for discussions going forward. With a little bit of belt tightening and more creative and collaborative approaches to funding needed services, we can reinvent state government.
“Under our plan, education would continue to receive additional dollars to educate our students and offer more opportunities for early education programming; $5 million would be made available to help treat those dealing with opioid addiction; and nearly 4,500 additional individuals with autism, intellectual disabilities and physical disabilities would receive needed services.
“I think it is a positive move to have a budget plan before the General Assembly for a vote in April, which will give us the time necessary to make any adjustments and agree on a final product before the June 30 deadline.”
