HARRISBURG – Reps. Ryan Warner (R-Fayette/Westmoreland) and Matt Dowling (R-Fayette/Somerset) today issued the following statement in response to the House passing a Fiscal Year 2017-18 state budget:

“I’m pleased to join my colleagues in supporting a budget that spends less than last year,” Warner said. “It limits the size of government and does its best to reduce waste. Most importantly, there are no tax increases or new borrowing in the House plan. We cannot continue to tax and borrow our way out of a state budget deficit. It is time to make government lean.”

Dowling said the proposal reduces spending from the plan issued by Gov. Tom Wolf by $815 million.

“This is an excellent proposal as it cuts spending from the previous fiscal year and adds education funding,” said Dowling. “The K-12 education plan calls for $11.8 billion, which is a record level for the Commonwealth. We are looking to chart a strong, new course for Pennsylvania government. We must protect our taxpayers while providing essential government services. This budget plan does this, and more.”

Warner added he is looking for passage of his budgeting legislation, which Dowling supports.

“In addition, I’m hopeful in the coming weeks the House will pass my performance-based budgeting proposal. House Bill 410 would require all state departments and agencies to justify their budget requests for all existing and proposed activities before they can receive consideration for budget funding. This will go a long way to ensuring government lives within its means.”
