HARRISBURG – This week, Rep. Dan Moul (R-Adams) presented
House Resolution 168, which commemorates the 20th anniversary of the founding of the Pennsylvania Gettysburg Monuments Project, on the House floor.
In his remarks, Moul said he learned about the now 20-year effort to repair, restore and preserve Gettysburg monuments and markers from one of his House colleagues, a Democrat from southwestern Pennsylvania, who initiated the effort.
“I was surprised to learn that each state is responsible for maintaining its own Civil War monuments. Consequently, many had fallen into disrepair and were in need of restoration and ongoing care,” said Moul. The Pennsylvania Gettysburg Monuments Project, which was established in 1997 by Rep. Harry Readshaw (D-Allegheny), set out to do this.
In 2003, in cooperation with the nonprofit Gettysburg Battlefield Preservation Association, the Gettysburg Pennsylvania Monuments Trust was established and 146 monuments representing Pennsylvania regiments were identified as being in need of ongoing care and maintenance. To date, more than $400,000 has been raised in this effort.
Moul participates in the annual “Ride to Gettysburg” in which hundreds of motorcycle enthusiasts gather outside the Pennsylvania Capitol building for the start of this ride to raise awareness and funding for the Gettysburg Monuments Project.
Upon presenting his resolution, Moul praised Readshaw for his tireless efforts to preserve the historical Gettysburg monuments – what Readshaw calls “icons of freedom.”
