Donation drop-off to be available at East Stroudsburg office
EAST STROUDSBURG – Aarti Katara, an intern at Rep. Rosemary M. Brown’s (R-Monroe/Pike) district office and a senior at Moravian Academy Upper School, is participating in “Operation Smile,” an international medical charity which has provided thousands of free surgeries for children and young adults in developing countries who are born with cleft lips, cleft palates or other facial deformities. Brown has sponsored House Resolution 1022 recognizing the work Operation Smile conducts.

In September, Aarti will be going on a medical mission to Madagascar and is collecting a specific list of items to take to the individuals in which she’s in contact. Brown has a drop-off box at her office in East Stroudsburg if residents of the district would like to help Aarti’s efforts.

“It is very important that our youth learn to think of others in a truly sincere and compassionate manner,” Brown said. “Aarti is a great example of a young, smart, kind leader, who is not only working hard for her own future success but thinking of others along her path. I hope the community will reach out to help her efforts through my office.”

“As part of the student team on my mission, I will be responsible for teaching six health care modules, including burn care and prevention, dental hygiene, nutrition, oral rehydration therapy, hands-only CPR and the Heimlich maneuver at hospitals, schools and orphanages,” Katara said. “I’ve learned it doesn’t matter where we go. It’s why we go that counts, and I would love to take some items from neighbors here at home to help people in need in another country.”

Aarti will be collecting the following items, in advance of her mission trip to Madagascar: toothbrushes, toothpaste, toys, stickers, non-toxic bubbles, mirrors, pipe cleaners, balloons, inflatable balls, crayons, coloring books, sunglasses, paint, finger paints, sidewalk chalk and stickers.

Operation Smile is one of the oldest and largest volunteer-based organizations dedicated to improving the health and lives of children worldwide through access to surgical care. Since 1982, Operation Smile has developed expertise in mobilizing volunteer medical teams to conduct surgical missions in resource-poor environments, while adhering to the highest standards of surgeries, by partnering with hospitals, governments, ministries and more.
