HARRISBURG – Gov. Tom Wolf today issued his budget address for the 2017-18 fiscal year to the Pennsylvania General Assembly. The governor’s proposed $32.34 billion spending plan includes no broad-based tax increases and sends more money to our public schools for basic education funding, PreK Counts, special education and Head Start Assistance.
State Rep. Marcia Hahn (R-Bushkill Township), a member of the House Appropriations Committee, released the following statement in response to the governor’s proposal:
“Gov. Wolf’s budget address is a distinct and refreshing change from those of his first two years in office when broad-based taxes were his default way of solving our revenue problems. Choosing a fiscally responsible path to prosperity is what taxpayers demand and deserve, and I applaud his change of heart.
“As a new member of the House Appropriations Committee, I’m looking forward to the upcoming hearings that will allow my colleagues and me to take a closer look at state agency expenditures. While I need to hear more details on the governor’s proposed $2 billion in cost savings, I’m hoping those hearings will reveal even more ways to reduce the size and price tag of state government.
“There are things in the proposal with which I have concerns, such as his desire to take on debt in order to fund certain programs. That being said, the governor did not reveal his entire ‘hand’ in today’s address, so the exact details of his plan are still unclear. With that in mind, I look forward to working with my House colleagues and putting together a responsible budget for 2017-18 that funds the core functions of government and keeps Pennsylvania moving in the right direction.”
