HARRISBURG – Rep. Tom Mehaffie (R-Dauphin) today said he is optimistic that the 2017-18 budget process can work for the people of the 106th District by being responsive to those who foot the bills of state government.

“As I take part in the state budget process for the first time as a state representative, I am focused on protecting the citizens and job creators of the 106th District from unnecessary government growth. After hearing the governor’s budget address today, I’m cautiously optimistic that he is on the same page,” Mehaffie said.

The $32.34 billion budget proposal, as outlined by the governor, is balanced, but without broad-based increases in sales and income taxes.

His proposal contains billions in potential cost-savings, including two main consolidations in state government. One would involve merging health and human services and the other would bring together criminal justice divisions in corrections, probation and parole. The intent is to consolidate duplicative functions, eliminate unnecessary agencies and streamline services through better innovation and technologies.

“While his address offered few specific details, I’m glad the governor is interested in finding ways to reduce spending while providing efficient, effective and sustainable state services and systems,” Mehaffie said. “I look forward to the upcoming House Appropriations Committee hearings that will unveil more details on his plan.”

The appropriations hearings, which are the next stage in the budget process, will begin on Tuesday, Feb. 21.
