HARRISBURG – On Tuesday, the governor presented his budget proposal for Pennsylvania’s 2017-18 state budget. Following the joint session of the General Assembly, Rep. Aaron Kaufer (R-Luzerne) outlined his budget priorities for the upcoming state spending plan:

“After listening to the governor’s budget address, I believe we are beginning from a much more responsible point than we have in recent years. We must continue to search for creative solutions to fund our budget without adding undue burden to the people throughout our districts, or to future generations. In the months to come, I look forward to a thoughtful and productive conversation to achieve these goals.

“Reprioritizing how we allocate our funding, and holding government agencies accountable for their success and failures should absolutely be part of these budget conversations. Identifying waste, fraud and abuse should be at the top of the priority list. I am committed to being a good financial steward and ensuring every cent of taxpayer money is being spent wisely throughout this, and every, budget cycle.

“Particularly, the specific issues I am most interested in throughout this budget process include funding our heroin and opioid abuse programs, reducing our bloated welfare system, and working to address the property tax issue in our state. Hopefully, the Legislature, the administration and the governor can work together to successfully craft a budget for the 2017-18 fiscal year that works for all Pennsylvanians and puts us on a path toward future prosperity.”
