HARRISBURG – Rep. Paul Schemel (R-Franklin) today joined his colleagues in listening to Gov. Tom Wolf present his 2017-18 budget proposal during a joint session of the House and Senate. He issued the following statement in reaction to the governor’s $32.3 billion spending plan.

“I applaud the governor for expressing a genuine interest in making Pennsylvania government more efficient and less costly. Perhaps he has looked at the outcome of the recent elections in Pennsylvania and realized that Pennsylvanians have no appetite for the larger and more powerful government that the governor sought the last two years.

“Although the governor’s budget proposal is a step in right direction, it still increases state spending by about $500 million and calls for a tax increase on Pennsylvanians of $1 billion. All of this after Pennsylvanians have already received a tax increase this year to the tune of an additional 8 cents on a gallon of gasoline.

“Under the governor’s proposal, residents of Franklin County will pay more in taxes without fixing the state’s broken education funding scheme or addressing our out-of-control pension deficit.

“I look forward to hearing more of the details on the governor’s proposal as we work toward passing a budget that truly benefits the residents of Franklin County and all of Pennsylvania.”
