HARRISBURG – Rep. Matt Dowling (R-Fayette/Somerset) today issued the following statement concerning the annual budget address by Gov. Tom Wolf to a joint session of the Pennsylvania General Assembly:

“The annual budget address in Harrisburg marks the starting point for the Commonwealth state budget process. From this point, the House Appropriations Committee will hold hearings on the plan and the General Assembly will have input going forward.

“I am pleased that the governor has come to the decision that broad-based tax increases are not needed to fund our state’s necessities. In addition, he said that holding down the cost of state government is a priority. The plan calls for drastic changes, which include the consolidation of duplicative functions, eliminating unnecessary agencies, and bringing innovations to delivering a solid quality of service

“We will take time to review the governor’s plan and will certainly concentrate on providing efficient, effective and sustainable services for our residents. The priorities are education, economic opportunity and public safety. Our hard-working taxpayers deserve a budget that will have the Commonwealth live within its means. That is the goal.”
