HARRISBURG – Following the governor’s 2017-18 state budget address before a joint session of the House and Senate, state Rep. Rob Kauffman (R-Franklin) offered these comments:
“I am pleased that the governor appears to have heeded the call of working men and women across the state in his decision to end his fight to increase broad-based taxes. The governor has put forth a plan that aims to merge several state agencies and departments to save state tax dollars and eliminate redundancies. While I haven’t seen the details, this plan is worthy of serious consideration.
“It’s good to hear the governor’s willingness to work with the Republican majority in our initiative to reinvent government. As we examine the details of the governor’s budget blueprint, I’m optimistic that we can find a way to work together if the governor seeks a collaborative effort to reduce state government. That would be a positive step forward for the future of the Commonwealth.”
“As always, this is only the first step in the yearly budget process and, although I have some concerns with certain parts of his proposal, I remain open minded to considering the governor’s ideas and looking for common ground in which we can move forward to producing a final budget.
“The next step is to examine the governor’s entire budget document and to hold budget hearings in which the Legislature has the opportunity to hear from most state departments and agencies on their needs and ideas concerning the budget.”
