HARRISBURG — House State Government Committee Majority Chairman Daryl Metcalfe (R-Butler) issued the following statement today regarding Gov. Tom Wolf’s 2017-18 state budget proposal:
“The governor’s unfulfilled promises of not increasing broad-based taxes or somehow generating additional savings by reshuffling executive agencies mean absolutely nothing until they are paired with substantive spending reductions.
“For starters, a 10 percent reduction in excessive public welfare spending, the Commonwealth’s single largest revenue drain for well over a decade, would result in more than $1 billion in savings for state taxpayers.
“In the coming weeks, the House State Government Committee is expected to consider the Taxpayer Protection Act (
House Bill 110) which would Constitutionally limit the future growth of state government spending, based on either the Consumer Price Index or a change in population.
“Final enactment of the Taxpayer Protection Act represents a Constitutional death sentence for the type of unsustainable government spending that America’s most liberal governor wants to inflict on every Commonwealth taxpayer, regardless of their ability to pay for it.
“I will continue to oppose any budget that calls for increased taxes, irresponsible spending and the confiscation of billions more from taxpayers’ pockets.”
