HARRISBURG – This week, the House met and finalized assignments for its 27 standing committees. In the 2017-18 legislative session, Rep. Craig Staats (R-Bucks) has been reappointed to the House Education Committee and the Aging and Older Adult Services Committee. Staats will also take a seat on the House Liquor Control and State Government committees.
“These are very active committees that handle a large volume of legislation of importance to the citizens of the 145th Legislative District,” said Staats. “I am particularly pleased that I was reappointed to the Education and Aging and Older Adult Services committees. I look forward to continuing my work on behalf of children and the elderly – our most vulnerable citizens.”
Staats is new to the House Liquor Control Committee, which provides legislative oversight of the laws and regulations governing the state’s liquor system, including the possible privatization measures. He will also join the State Government Committee for the first time. That committee reviews legislation addressing many aspects of state government, including proposed amendments to the Pennsylvania Constitution, statewide initiatives and referenda, the Public Official and Employee Ethics Act, Regulatory Review Act and regulations regarding state licensing for various professions.
All new laws begin at the committee level. Once a bill is introduced, it is assigned to the appropriate standing committee for consideration. Committees may hold hearings on the legislation, consider amendments and ultimately determine whether to report the bills to the full House for a vote.
“We have a very challenging and full agenda before us,” said Staats. “I am preparing for a very busy and productive session.”
