COLLIER TOWNSHIP — Surrounded by construction workers at the International Union of Painters and Allied Trades District Council No. 57, Rep. Jason Ortitay (R-Washington/Allegheny) today kicked off “Construction Opioid Awareness Week” in Pennsylvania.

House Resolution 981, that designates the week and works in concert with an effort by the Keystone Contractors Association, which has partnered with the National Safety Council, to organize educational resources and promote awareness of the problem and potential solutions. Industry and labor groups, including the trade unions, chose this week as it is the height of the construction season.
“While summer means vacations for many, those employed in construction are working hard in the heat building homes, businesses and roads, which help fuel our economy,” Ortitay said. “The strenuous activity within their jobs leads to many aches, pains and injuries. As a result, many look to medication for relief. Unfortunately, this can result in addiction. By bringing attention to this potential problem, we hope to reduce addiction and look toward alternative pain management techniques.”
The 46th Legislative District includes Collier and South Fayette townships and Bridgeville, Heidelberg, McDonald and Oakdale boroughs in Allegheny County. It also encompasses Canton, Cecil, Mt. Pleasant, Robinson and Smith townships and Burgettstown, McDonald and Midway boroughs in Washington County.
