HARRISBURG – Rep. Eric Nelson (R-Hempfield) today was appointed to five House committees for the 2017-18 legislative session.
His committee assignments are Aging and Older Adult Services, Consumer Affairs, Human Services, Policy and Urban Affairs. As part of his strong work on the Policy Committee, he will serve as a deputy chair this coming session.
“It is an honor to continue to serve on the Aging, Human Services and Urban Affairs committees,” Nelson said. “With the opioid epidemic continuing to ravage Pennsylvania and the serious issues confronting our workshops for people with disabilities, I am hopeful the Human Services Committee can continue its positive work to address these issues. In addition, I’m eager to add the Consumer Affairs Committee to my assignments as its work impacts Pennsylvanians’ everyday lives.”
The House Aging and Older Adult Services Committee is responsible for all programs and services available pursuant to the State Lottery Law, i.e., PACE/PACENET and senior transportation programs (shared-ride and fixed-route transportation sometimes shared with the Transportation Committee); long-term care (from a resident rights standpoint); Office of Long-Term Living issues (assisted living licensure, home and community-based services, etc.); Area Agencies on Aging; Department of Aging; Pennsylvania Council on Aging; and Intra-Governmental Council on Long-Term Care. Also included in the committee’s oversight and legislative development process are the Property Tax and Rent Rebate Program (shared with Finance Committee) and matters dealing with elder abuse.
The Consumer Affairs Committee focuses on issues such as cable television, consumer fraud, credit and debt collection practices, health club problems, landlord/tenant problems, telephone and mail solicitations, and the Public Utility Commission.
The House Human Services Committee has oversight of issues within the Department of Human Services and the Department of Drug and Alcohol Programs. Among the issues it has dealt with included legislation to address the heroin and opioid overdose crisis by trying to prevent these powerful drugs from getting into the wrong hands. The committee will continue to convene hearings regarding the delivery of human services throughout the Commonwealth and the challenges faced by individuals with physical and intellectual disabilities, along with those needing mental health services and drug and alcohol treatment.
The House Majority Policy Committee travels across the state, conducting hearings and roundtable discussions about important issues to gather testimony and information from key stakeholders.
The House Urban Affairs Committee reviews legislation affecting the state’s largest cities including housing; urban redevelopment; economic development; land use planning and zoning; growth management; infrastructure financing; and city services such as police, fire, sewage and water.
The 57th Legislative District includes the following Westmoreland County communities: the city of Greensburg; the townships of Hempfield (part) and Salem; and the boroughs of Delmont, Hunker, New Stanton, South Greensburg, Southwest Greensburg and Youngwood.
