HARRISBURG – Rep. Jason Ortitay (R-Washington/Allegheny) this week announced he has been assigned to the Appropriations, Environmental Resources and Energy, Gaming Oversight and Urban Affairs committees for the 2017-18 legislative session.
“I’m pleased to be re-appointed to the Gaming Oversight Committee,” Ortitay said. “With the nearby Meadows Casino, I understand the importance it plays in Washington County’s economy. In addition, I’m looking forward to joining the Appropriations Committee. Important decisions need to be made to craft a budget that recognizes our needs, not our wants, and shapes our Commonwealth for decades to come.”
As many parts of the state budget originate in the House of Representatives, the Appropriations Committee is the primary committee of the House tasked with overseeing state government spending, state fiscal policies and developing a state budget each fiscal year.
The Environmental Resources and Energy Committee has legislative oversight of more than 45 different environmental and energy-related laws; while the Gaming Oversight Committee oversees legislation dealing with slot machines and table games, as well as the state’s bingo, small games of chance and amusement laws.
The House Urban Affairs Committee reviews legislation affecting the state’s largest cities including housing; urban redevelopment; economic development; land use planning and zoning; growth management; infrastructure financing; and city services, such as police, fire, sewage and water.
The 46th Legislative District includes Collier and South Fayette townships and Bridgeville, Heidelberg, McDonald and Oakdale boroughs in Allegheny County. It also encompasses Canton, Cecil, Mt. Pleasant, Robinson and Smith townships, and Burgettstown, McDonald and Midway boroughs in Washington County.
