HARRISBURG – The House Transportation Committee unanimously passed legislation authored by Rep. Jeff Wheeland (R-Lycoming), that addresses the inconsistency in radar and speedometer calibration cycle requirements and provides for electronic certification of the calibration testing for speed timing devices used by law enforcement on a daily basis.
“These devices are heavily relied upon by our police officers and we need to do our part to ensure the laws on the books are consistent,” said Wheeland. “I’m pleased that my colleagues on the Transportation Committee saw the importance of
House Bill 1825 and gave it unanimous support. Our law enforcement will greatly appreciate their commitment to public safety.”
Wheeland said under current law radar and speedometers are required to be on a calibration cycle of one year. Electronic timing devices, although having been proven to withstand longer calibration cycles, are subject to a calibration cycle of 60 days. House Bill 1825 will correct this inconsistency while also allowing for the certifying technician conducting the test on the equipment to complete the Certificate of Accuracy electronically on a form provided by the Department of Transportation.
“Strengthening this law is crucial to public safety and keeping our Vehicle Code up-to-date,” said Wheeland.
The bill now goes to the full House for consideration.
