HARRISBURG – Rep. James Struzzi (R-Indiana) today announced that the House of Representatives has unanimously voted to advance his bill, House Bill 1773, which would establish the Tuition Assistance for Active Volunteers Program. This program would provide tuition assistance to active members of a volunteer fire company or emergency medical services agency who attend an approved institution of higher learning.

“The value of our first responders is priceless, as they are the dedicated souls we call in our most desperate and dangerous times. They deserve to be rewarded for the hard work and sacrifices they make daily to help us when we need it most,” said Struzzi. “It is my hope that this program will incentivize and encourage more brave individuals to volunteer for these first responder services while also potentially increasing enrollment in our state system schools.”

This bill is a part of the House Republican Caucus’ “Helpers and Heroes” initiative, which is a package of bills aimed at thanking and supporting Pennsylvania’s volunteer first responders. The initiative is a response to the results of Senate Resolution 6, which established a bipartisan, bicameral commission to recommend improvements to the delivery of emergency services in Pennsylvania.

House Bill 1773 is now before the Senate for consideration.
