HARRISBURG – The Pennsylvania House of Representatives on Monday passed legislation that would help protect seniors in the Commonwealth from consumer fraud, said Rep. Meghan Schroeder (R-Bucks), who authored the measure.
“Sadly, our seniors have become a major target for consumer fraud and with the rising number of scams, it is critical we are doing everything we can to prevent them from becoming a victim,” said Schroeder.
House Bill 1061 would require the Pennsylvania Office of Attorney General to notify the Pennsylvania Department of Aging of any investigations and enforcement actions taken within the purview of the PA Telemarketer Registrations Act when those investigations and enforcement actions involve a consumer who is 60 years of age or older. The legislation would ensure that cases which feature an older adult must be presented to the Department of Aging to identify patterns, areas and persons involved in scams.
“Not only will this legislation protect our seniors, but it will help discover and locate new forms of scams so the public may be aware of them,” said Schroeder.
The legislation would allow for better communication between the attorney general’s office and the Department of Aging pertaining to seniors who are involved in scams, as well as the newest scams developing in the Commonwealth.
House Bill 1061 now awaits consideration in the state Senate.
