HARRISBURG – The House today approved legislation by Rep. Dawn Keefer (R-Dillsburg) to give landowners more options to mark their properties as private.
Under Keefer’s
House Bill 1772, property owners would be able to use specialized purple paint to mark their property lines and indicate that trespassing onto the land is not permitted.
“Too often, no trespassing signs become tattered or illegible over time, or are removed by trespassers, making it difficult for people to know or easily recognize they are entering private property,” Keefer said. “This purple paint would make it easier to delineate property lines and provide notice that private property is not to be trespassed on.”
Keefer’s bill provides landowners with the option of using commercially available purple paints. The bill also specifies that the stripes must be at least 8 inches long and 8 inches wide, between 3 and 5 feet above the ground on trees or posts and are placed no more than 100 feet apart.
The paint is already commercially produced and available. Currently 11 states, including bordering West Virginia, allow for the use of the paint, and two other states are considering legislation similar to Keefer’s bill.
House Bill 1772 now goes to the Senate for consideration.
