HB49 HAD TO GO BACK TO THE SENATE FOR ADDITIONAL CONCURRENCE. THE RELEASE BELOW REFLECTS THAT CHANGE.
Brown’s Financial Literacy Graduation Credit Requirements Bill Awaiting Concurrence from the Senate
HARRISBURG – In seeking to encourage schools to incorporate financial literacy into their high school curriculum, Rep. Rosemary Brown (R-Monroe/Pike) announced that her financial literacy graduation credit requirements legislation,
House Bill 49, is awaiting Senate concurrence after receiving approval from both the House (161-37) after which approval the bill will head to the governor’s desk.
“I have been advocating for financial literacy education policy for the past six years and have worked diligently supporting financial reality fairs and more in the district. I am thankful for the bipartisan support I have received to get this bill to the finish line,” said Brown. “Having the ability to gain basic knowledge and understanding of financial resources is crucial for our children today so they have the education to help them with real-world decisions. This legislation acts as an incentive for students to take financial literacy credits by allowing the coursework to satisfy a graduation requirement for social studies, family and consumer science, mathematics or business education.”
“Importantly, the public school has the discretion to determine the graduation credit requirement to which the credit earned shall be applied,” Brown continued. “I encourage parents and guardians to discuss with their children financial literacy coursework and how they can work it into their schedule before graduation.”
This legislation also included language to amend the School Code based on feedback from our schools. House Bill 49 returns arrest powers to our school police officers, amends training deadlines, extends the Higher Education Commission reporting deadline and provides specifics when a student seeks a fostering independence waiver.
