HARRISBURG – State Rep. Marcy Toepel (R-Montgomery) today announced she will not seek re-election at the end of her current legislative term. She has been a member of the state House since 2010, and currently serves in leadership as majority chairman of the House Republican Caucus.
“My time in the General Assembly has been a truly rewarding experience and I give my heartfelt thanks to the residents of the 147th District for their support in allowing me to serve,” said Toepel. “It has been both an awesome and humbling experience.”
Toepel is the first woman from Montgomery County to serve in a leadership position in the House. She was first elected to the position by her colleagues in November 2016.
During her tenure, Toepel has stood firm on holding the line on taxes and has supported efforts that have resulted in a 39% increase in K-12 education spending over the past decade. She has also spearheaded several notable legislative accomplishments, including:
• The Brad Fox Law, which restored a five-year minimum sentence for those convicted of making repeat straw purchases of firearms.
• Preservation of open space, including help to save Stone Leigh in Montgomery County from eminent domain.
• Protection for victims of child pornography, with enhanced sentencing guidelines for those convicted on child pornography charges.
• Securing millions of dollars annually from Valley Forge Casino to benefit Montgomery County parks, trails and historic sites as well as child advocacy centers and domestic abuse shelters. A total of $3.35 million has been secured to date.
• Creation of the first Rare Disease Advisory Council in Pennsylvania, which is now becoming a national model.
“It has been rewarding to have a number of bills signed into law but there is still much to do, including the urgent need to address property taxes and how we fund our schools,” said Toepel. “I have an open house scheduled at each of my district offices in the next couple of weeks and encourage residents to come out and let me know their ideas and concerns related to state government moving forward.”
The open houses will be held on the following dates from noon to 4 p.m.:
• Friday, Dec. 13 – Gilberstville District Office, 1885 Swamp Pike, Suite 107, in Gilbertsville.
• Friday, Dec. 20 – Harleysville District Office, 410 Main St., Suite 200, in Harleysville.
The last day of Toepel’s current legislative term is Nov. 30, 2020.
