HARRISBURG – Rep. Josh Kail (R-Beaver/Washington) issued the following statement regarding his budget priorities in response to Gov. Tom Wolf’s annual budget address:
“Raising the minimum wage would be detrimental to Pennsylvanians, putting 34,000 people out of work. The better solution is to guide people to strong jobs. The trades offer lucrative careers that don’t require a college degree. By filling these in-demand positions, people would have long-term success and the Commonwealth wouldn’t be sidelined waiting for work to be done that doesn’t have enough workers to meet demand.
“In addition to killing jobs, raising the minimum wage would also hurt our small businesses and nonprofits that have tight budgets and are already struggling to fill positions because of the competitive job market.
“The governor has to remember that the best ways to increase revenue is by growing the economy, not handicapping it. Calling for spending increases instead of adopting pro-growth policies is a mismanagement of the state budget and is unfair to all Pennsylvanians.
“We also need to focus on being financially sound while the economy is strong. This budget should take care of critical services but avoid overspending and the additional debt that would be required to pay for it.”
