HARRISBURG – Gov. Tom Wolf kicked off the state budget process today, when he delivered his annual budget address to a joint session of the General Assembly. The governor’s budget proposes to spend $36 billion, up $2 billion from the budget approved last June. Rep. Frank Ryan (R-Lebanon), a certified public accountant who has been working aggressively on strategies in the House to bring state spending under control, said the governor’s plan is unrealistic and unsustainable.
“In booming economic times, we should be putting money away, paying down debt and covering our unfunded liabilities, but the governor proposes to spend more and more. Last year’s budget was not a suggestion. We need to get state spending under control and be better custodians of taxpayer money. We need to hold this governor accountable and we will,” said Ryan.
The governor’s spending plan will be scrutinized during budget hearings in February and March with state departments, agencies and others who rely on state funding. The hearings, which may be viewed on
pahousegop.com, will help lawmakers determine if proposed expenditures are justified and warranted.
The deadline for a final budget is June 30.
