HARRISBURG – Gov. Tom Wolf today unveiled his proposed state budget for the 2020-21 fiscal year before a joint session of the General Assembly. The more than $36 billion spending plan is $2 billion above the enacted 2019-20 budget and includes a request for an additional $6 million in debt service.
State Rep. Andrew Lewis (R-Dauphin) issued this statement in reaction to the proposal:
“I appreciate Gov. Wolf’s efforts and look forward to forging a responsible budget that funds state government’s core functions. With that said, the proposal he offered today demands too much of Pennsylvania taxpayers. The amount of increased spending and borrowing does not fit the definition of ‘living within our means.’
“The governor has laudable goals with regard to education but requesting a substantial increase in the amount of debt we carry is not one of them. By borrowing at such unsustainable levels, we are setting future generations up to have to shoulder the fiscal burden.
“Fiscally responsible policy is the reason we were able to set aside money in the Rainy Day Fund each of the last two years. That fund is not even mentioned in the governor’s plan, and I find that disappointing.
“Both sides of the aisle need to work together to produce a state budget that is better than this. I look forward to doing my part for the residents of the 105th District.”
