HARRISBURG – Gov. Tom Wolf’s $36.06 billion budget proposal for 2020-21 represents a dangerous increase of $2.05 billion over the previous year’s approved spending plan, according to Rep. Tom Mehaffie (R-Dauphin).
“Listening to the governor’s plan, I liked hearing that it was a no-tax increase budget, much like the budgets we passed without tax increases in my first three years in the Legislature. However, I am concerned that there is a multibillion-dollar increase in the spending plan and no real way to pay for that. I heard about some increases in revenue, but not enough to fulfill the needed $3 billion to $4 billion,” Mehaffie said.
Mehaffie added that he is concerned about taking from one line item or program to pay for another, comparing it to a “robbing Peter to pay Paul” scenario.
“I don’t know how that is going to affect those other line items and, more importantly, who it is going to affect,” he said.
The 2020-21 budget will be negotiated and must be in place by July 1.
