HARRISBURG – Rep. Ryan Warner (R-Fayette/Westmoreland) issued the following statement in response to Gov. Tom Wolf’s $36 billion budget proposal outlined before a joint session of the General Assembly on Tuesday:
“Once again, the governor is showing how out of touch he is with Pennsylvania families who are working hard for their money and frustrated by how much of it ends up being spent – and all too often wasted – by government. Even with a projected revenue surplus of $300 million for this fiscal year, the governor can’t contain his appetite to spend beyond the funds available and beyond the budget agreed to by him and the General Assembly last year. As part of today’s proposal, he is requesting nearly $600 million to cover spending beyond the current year’s budget, and I suspect he will be asking for more by year’s end.
“That’s why I am once again calling for action on my Taxpayer Protection Act (
House Bill 1316), which would impose a constitutional limitation on the growth in state budget spending. The Wolf administration is not the first administration that seems incapable of managing a budget. Enacting a constitutional requirement of tying spending increases to a formula based on population and inflation would force future administrations to think before they spend.
“Simply put, Pennsylvania taxpayers can’t afford any more taxes, and state government needs to spend less. It’s that simple, and I am committed to a budget that meets these standards.”
