Feb. 05, 2020
HARRISBURG – Rep. Jack Rader (R-Monroe) joined his House and Senate colleagues for a joint session of the General Assembly to hear Gov. Tom Wolf outline his budget proposal for the 2020-21 fiscal year.
Rader issued the following statement in reaction to the governor’s $36 billion spending plan:
“The governor’s proposal does not raise taxes, but one thing I don’t understand is how he can spend more money at the same time.
“I want to see additional funding spent on education. Creating economic growth statewide is also important because it leads to higher wages, better jobs and an improved quality of life.
“I was disappointed the governor made no mention of property tax reform, which is a huge issue in my district. I also have concerns about his offline spending, which is something we will need to address.
“Overall, I would like to find common ground with the administration and take a commonsense approach to governing. If the governor wants to go in that direction, then I’m all for that.”
Rader noted that the governor’s address is just the beginning of the annual budget process. The House Appropriations Committee will conduct a series of hearings starting Tuesday, Feb. 18, to examine the details of the governor’s plan and how state agencies are spending their funding.
