HARRISBURG – State Rep. Jim Struzzi (R-Indiana) today announced that he has filed legislation to honor Sgt. Carl Roof. House Bill 2324 would designate a portion of State Route 4001 as the Sgt. Carl Roof Bridge. The bridge runs over Crooked Creek in Indiana County.

A native of Armstrong Township, Roof served in the United States Army during World War II. On Sept. 6, 1944, Roof was taken as a prisoner of war by the German army and was kept prisoner for 11 months before making it back home to the United States.

“Sgt. Roof’s bravery and perseverance in defense of our nation are nothing short of heroic,” said Struzzi. “His actions, and those of his brothers in arms, successfully defeated tyranny and allowed us to remain a free world. I thank him for his service, and all of those who defend our country at home and abroad.”

Roof, now 97 years of age, lives in Indiana County near the bridge.
