HARRISBURG – Rep. Jim Gregory (R-Blair) expressed frustration upon learning of Gov. Tom Wolf’s intention to veto
Senate Bill 613, which would reopen businesses that follow safety measures.
He released the following statement:
“My House colleagues and I were presented an opportunity to engage with the governor to pass legislation (Senate Bill 613) in a bipartisan fashion that would provide safe, slow and organized return to work for business sectors of our economy.
“Today, Governor Tom Wolf is signaling his planned veto of this legislation, failing to recognize what this veto does to prevent certain sectors from being able to safely return to work. With this bill, many of the 1.4 million people filing for unemployment compensation would have had a safe chance to leave that list and earn their living.
“As a result, I am left with no alternative but to pursue a co-sponsorship of
House Bill 836, which mirrors a similar bill in the Senate. This bill would provide for the immediate termination of the governor’s emergency order and would do so within just a few days of passage.
“This legislation is not without its concerns, including an effect on federal funding.
“However, as the state representative of the 80th District, I must speak loudly for the voters who elected me to Harrisburg. My constituents are suffering like never before. Together, we are staying at home and sheltering. Together, we continue to care for our vulnerable citizens and educate our children.
“We have seen the positive results of these efforts. I am confident that, together, we will continue to remain safe in our communities when abiding by Centers for Disease Control guidelines in the workplace and undergoing other measures.
“With that all in mind, I provide my support of House Bill 836 as the last resort to force Gov. Wolf to work with our legislature and listen to the voices of our citizens.”
