ABBOTTSTOWN – Rep. Torren Ecker (R-Adams/Cumberland) announced today that he will introduce legislation to immediately reopen florists in Pennsylvania. Ecker issued the following statement on his proposed legislation:
“Florist locations across the state have been shuttered for more than a month under the governor’s business closures. A typical florist location has one to maybe three employees and one or two customers on site at any one time, which is well below the Center for Disease Control and Prevention’s guideline to limit gatherings to 10 people or less.
“With the school year canceled, so are proms, which are typically a busy time for florists. In addition, events, such as dinners, graduations and weddings, that would traditionally mean business for florists have been canceled. Allowing for sales and the delivery of flowers would help florists fiscally survive at this time.
“Delivery services make it possible for the safe exchange of florists’ beautiful products, and more importantly, makes it possible to brighten the day of those who might feel forgotten or overwhelmed by isolation. At the very least, sending a floral arrangement is a way to let our friends and loved ones know that they are in our thoughts, minds, hearts and prayers.
“Flowers and floral arrangements are still available for purchase at others stores, such as grocery stores and convenience stores. My legislation would bring parity to the floral industry.”
