HARRISBURG – The House of Representatives today passed a stabilizing, temporary budget bill that will fund the majority of the state for the next five months with the exception of education, which will be funded for the next 12 months. Rep. Bob Brooks (R-Allegheny/Westmoreland), who voted to approve the measure, released the following statement.
“The COVID-19 pandemic has been a very difficult time for everyone. Every Pennsylvanian is making sacrifices. House Bill 2387 is designed to keep the state moving forward and offering more time to manage the unknowns. It also gives us time to get the necessary data to make informed decisions.
“I will not bend when it comes to education. Our students deserve the best and we need to provide it. My colleagues and I agree to provide a quality education for the next academic year requires full funding for 12 months. That means all levels of learning – PreK-12, special education, career and technical education, and higher education must not be neglected. This budget provides the necessary resources to allow our schools to open safely.”
“I also voted yes because this budget does not have any broad-based tax increases or program disruptions. The $25.8 billion spending plan stabilizes spending and gives certainty to the people of our Commonwealth.
“A timely budget is a vital step in the right direction as our state faces challenges we have not faced in our lifetimes.”
House Bill 2387 now goes to the Senate for consideration.
