HARRISBURG – Today, the House Aging and Older Adult Services Committee held an informational meeting which addressed long-term care facility resident safety during COVID-19.

“Families and residents pay thousands of dollars each month to ensure they receive vital care and are kept protected and safe by those in charge of the facilities,” said Rep. Gary W. Day (R-Lehigh/Berks), chairman of the House Aging and Older Adult Services Committee. “The fact that, despite the cost to stay at these facilities, residents’ safety was compromised with many succumbing to COVID-19 is a tragedy. It is imperative that we continue to work alongside the Department of Aging, local health care providers, and area long-term care facilities to ensure additional safety and contagion measures are in place to ensure we do not see this magnitude of loss in these facilities again in the future.”

Testifiers for this meeting included:

Denise Curry, vice president and general manager, Eastern Division for HCR ManorCare; Michele Bellantoni, M.D., associate professor and clinical director, Division of Geriatric Medicine & Gerontology – Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine; and Christina Diaz, a Chester County resident who lost a loved one in long-term care facility following COVID-19 diagnosis.
