HARRISBURG – Rep. Carl Walker Metzgar (R-Somerset/Bedford) today announced that the House of Representatives has failed to overturn the governor’s veto of
House Resolution 836, which would terminate the COVID-19 disaster emergency first declared on March 6. The General Assembly had previously adopted the resolution on June 9, followed by the governor’s veto on July 14.
“Our businesses are closing, our workers are suffering and our families are scared. The business closure orders given by the governor and the secretary of Health have devastated small businesses throughout Pennsylvania, and the support systems offered to them by the administration have floundered,” said Metzgar. “I am appalled that members of the House would vote to uphold the emergency declaration, given the disastrous affects it has had on our Commonwealth. I will continue to work with my colleagues to get our people back to work and ensure economic stability for Pennsylvania.”
The resolution would require the secretary of State to notify the governor of the adoption of the resolution along with a directive to terminate the declaration, in accordance with statute. Article I, Section 12 of the Pennsylvania Constitution provides the General Assembly with the authority to suspend laws.
The measure failed by a vote of 118-84.
