HARRISBURG — Rep. Jason Ortitay (R-Washington/Allegheny) today issued the following statement in response to Gov. Tom Wolf vetoing House Bill 2787:

“I had hoped the governor would come to his senses after House Bill 2787 passed with overwhelming bipartisan support in both the House and the Senate. Instead, he continues to act without using scientific data.

“This veto is a slap in the face of parents whose children participate in athletics. Many of our stadiums and gymnasiums can hold thousands of people. His arbitrary limit of 250 people in a football stadium and 25 in a gymnasium is nonsensical. The indoor limit especially makes it impossible for the full roster of both teams to be present for a match.

“Both home and visitor parents should be able to watch their children compete. I have heard heartbreaking stories of athletes injured and their parents can only watch on a livestream helplessly. As a soon-to-be father, I can only imagine the sinking feeling they must have inside.

“I’m hopeful my colleagues will not switch their votes so we can override this veto in short order. It is the only logical thing to do.”

The 46th Legislative District includes Collier and South Fayette townships and Bridgeville, Heidelberg, McDonald and Oakdale boroughs in Allegheny County. It also encompasses Canton, Cecil, Mt. Pleasant, Robinson and Smith townships, and Burgettstown, McDonald and Midway boroughs in Washington County.
