ABBOTTSTOWN – In response to Gov. Tom Wolf’s veto of House Bill 2787 to ensure decisions about school sports and activities, including policies regarding spectators, are made at the local level, Rep. Torren Ecker (R-Adams/Cumberland) issued the following statement:

“The governor’s action today is another example of him refusing to relinquish even an ounce of power to local officials who were duly elected to make such decisions. Since March, the governor has outright refused to work with members of the Legislature and local elected officials to form the appropriate local response to the pandemic. Instead, he has opted to implement a blanket statewide response that does not fit all areas of Pennsylvania.

“Our student-athletes have worked hard to get where they are today and part of that is due to the support they received from their families. Parents, grandparents and other family members should be allowed to watch their loved ones play the sports they love.

“I have requested our House leadership team immediately schedule a vote to override the veto. House Bill 2787 was approved by the House and Senate by veto-proof majorities. I would hope those who casted votes in favor the bill then hold firm to their convictions during a veto override vote. I know I stand with our parents and student athletes on this issue.”
