HARRISBURG – Rep. Matthew Dowling (R-Fayette/Somerset) issued the following statement following Gov. Tom Wolf’s veto of
House Bill 2787, which would have allowed local authorities to decide whether it was safe to allow spectators at outdoor school sporting events and to resume school extracurricular activities:
“Again, the governor contradicts himself. On one hand, he talks about how it makes sense for local authorities to determine whether schools should be virtual, in person or a combination of the two, but then he refuses to allow school boards the same decision-making power when it comes to family members who want to watch their children play football or run track.
“How can parents be indefinitely blocked from watching their own children play? I don’t know when his assault on our rights will end, but it’s long overdue he start listening to Pennsylvanians’ collective response.
“I hear them loud and clear, and they want to be allowed to make the most appropriate decisions given the specific ways the pandemic is – or isn’t – impacting their area. His one-size-fits-all approach is ridiculous.
“That’s why my colleagues in the House and I will vote next week on the bill in an attempt to override his veto. If the House and Senate members who voted for the bill the first time do so again, we’ll finally be out from under his thumb… on this topic, at least.”
