HARRISBURG – Gov. Tom Wolf’s veto of
House Bill 2787 is the latest example of his unilateral decision-making that ignores the bipartisan support for local school districts being able to make decisions about how spectators can watch school sports, according to Rep. Andrew Lewis (R-Dauphin).
House Bill 2787 would allow Pennsylvania’s 500 school districts to choose if spectators can watch high school football and other sports. It passed the House on a 155-47 vote and Senate on a 39-11 vote.
Wolf vetoed the measure Monday.
“This is yet another instance of Wolf acting on his own without regard to the Legislature or courts. A federal court judge already ruled that Wolf’s crowd limits at outdoor events are unconstitutional, yet he continues to recklessly take these actions,” Lewis said. “School officials care about the health and welfare of their community members and can be trusted to make their own decisions regarding sports.”
Lewis said he anticipates a vote being taken in the Legislature to potentially override Wolf’s veto.
