SENECA – Rep. Lee James (R-Venango/Butler) issued the following statement regarding the failed veto override vote in the House of
House Bill 2787, which would have allowed school districts to decide whether it’s safe to allow students to participate in extracurricular activities and spectators to attend outdoor sporting events:
“Barring parents from attending their children’s games not only inappropriately breaches their constitutional rights but also presents safety concerns. We’ve all heard stories of children suffering from medical incidents – such as a concussion – without their parents in attendance and able to make decisions about their care.
“I am beyond disappointed that 25 legislators who originally voted in support of the bill changed their vote today. It’s our responsibility to vote according to the wishes and needs of the districts we serve, and I’m not convinced that happened today.
“Safety should never be a partisan issue, and the veto override vote definitely feels like public service took a backseat to politics today.”
