HARRISBURG – After the state House effort to supersede the governor’s restrictions on high school sports fell short of the two-thirds vote necessary to override a gubernatorial veto, Rep. Kurt Masser (R-Columbia/Montour/Northumberland), who voted for the override, issued the following statement:
“This vote was disappointing for our high school football players, marching band participants, student athletes and their families. These decisions about health and safety guidelines for school sports and extracurricular activities should be made at the local level. The governor’s arbitrary limit on the number of spectators means the same 250 participant restriction applies to small venues and much larger outdoor stadiums. The governor and his colleagues are governing based on fear and that does not lead to good policies.
“Students will miss out on opportunities because too many of my colleagues failed to support them. Parents won’t be able to watch from the stands as their sons and daughters compete because too many of my colleagues voted to deny them that opportunity. My colleagues’ votes will mean a student athlete who is injured at an event won’t have his or her parents there when it happens.
“I’m disappointed because we had an opportunity to work together in a bipartisan manner and do what is right for students and their families, but partisan politics won and common sense lost. I will continue fighting, standing up and voting for the interests of students and their families.”
