SENECA – Rep. Lee James (R-Venango/Butler) issued the following statement regarding Gov. Tom Wolf’s veto of
House Bill 2025, which would have required the support of the General Assembly before Pennsylvania could enter the Regional Greenhouse Gas Initiative (RGGI) or any similar multi-state compact:
“Government shouldn’t operate atop some hill, independent of the voice of the very people it’s supposed to serve. By ignoring the House and Senate, the governor is silencing the people who have elected them – therefore eliminating the representation of the people.
“The people are the ones who will ultimately be impacted most by these decisions when the costs for gas and oil rise. How does he consider it appropriate to unilaterally raise basic living costs in the Commonwealth at a time when the unemployment rate is still high from how the pandemic was handled in our state?
“Not to mention, Pennsylvania has already exceeded goals to reduce toxic emissions, goals that have not yet been achieved by other states – even ones that are not fossil fuel drillers, deliverers and exporters.
“If the governor would like to make changes for the benefit of the environment, he should make sure he doesn’t hurt the people he’s supposed to serve in the process. He needs to show some understanding of economic and business reality.”
